We are delighted to announce that we have been shortlisted for Building Contractor of the Year: England (Turnover under £15m), in the Construction Awards of Excellence 2022.

The judges shortlisted Calztec for demonstrating excellent project delivery, build quality, customer service, health and safety and environmental standards. The judges were also looking for companies that excelled at investing in technology, specialist skills and innovative thinking.

Sophie Clarke, C.O.O., Calztec, said: “We are humbled to have been shortlisted in this category. Our team have worked hard to deliver a quality service to our customers, and we are pleased that their efforts have shone through during this stage of judging.”

The independent panel of judges said it was an extremely difficult decision to shortlist due to the quality and number of entries for the awards.

Calztec will be competing against D&G Builders and Joiners and Interclass at the prestigious ceremony taking place on 7th April at the Chelsea Harbour Hotel in London.

Leading fit out and refurbishment specialist, Calztec, is proud to announce it has secured three new projects with three of its clients, Avison Young, CBRE and Winston Group.

The First Contract

Historic client of Calztec’s, Avison Young, awarded the refurbishment project at Westgate Business Park, Northampton. This project consists of an extensive external refurb, including the replacement of the roof over clad, roof lights and the vertical cladding as well as installing new roller shutters, new aluminium windows and new entrance door. Internal renovations will also be completed, including office and warehouse refresh, M&E, including new LED lighting installed throughout the office and warehouse, and new toilet block.

The Second Contract

Calztec were pleased to be awarded this demolition project by long standing client, CBRE, at HSBC in Huntingdon High Street. The strip out works consists of party wall build, building repairs, decoration and M&E with the end result being, two separate shop front units.

The Hat-trick

New client to Calztec, Winston Group, awarded a strip out, demolition and build works contract at their site at Station Road, Solihull. Once complete, the unit will be transformed into two separate units.

A recent article by Homebuilding & Renovating has warned that construction material shortages will continue throughout the year, creating challenges for businesses right across the supply chain.

Are material price rises and stock shortages putting pressure on the delivery of your project?

We’ve picked out the highlights for you:

The cost of building materials and components rose by almost 7.8%.
Construction products in short supply include: cement, steel, timber, electrical components, concrete, paint and plaster and plasterboard.
Structural steel increased by 17.6%, timber by 80%, cement by 30% and chipboard by 10%.
82% of the Federation of Master Builders’ members have reported material price rises.
Materials for repair and maintenance work rose by 9% year on year.
Brexit uncertainty impacted supply, with c. 60% of imported materials coming from the EU.

We have been named as a finalist in the Contractor of the Year (up to £300m) category of the 2021 Building Awards.

The judges shortlisted Calztec for demonstrating operational excellence across the business, including investing in innovation, training and R&D, customer satisfaction, health and safety and sustainability.

Sophie Clarke, Business Manager, said: “I am very proud of our team here for always striving to grow, develop and exceed expectations. It has been an exciting year for Calztec and we have had the honour to work on some very interesting and unique projects alongside our clients.”

Competition for the award is strong, with 3 other businesses competing for the title: Beard, Glencar and JLES.

The winners will be announced at the Building Awards ceremony taking place on Tuesday 2nd November at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

The Fred Winter Centre Project is on the verge of completion

This week Spring Housing Association welcomed guests on guided tours to get a progress update of the new facilities, where we have provided strip out and fit out services.

On completion, the centre in Stratford-upon-Avon will provide 15 apartments, 2 of which are emergency units; mental health support; a food bank; a community cafe; meeting space and training and access to employment opportunities.

It’s been an honour to be the Main Contractor on this inspiring project and we would like to thank all our team and contractors for turning the vision into reality.

Final stages of the project are underway at the Fred Winter centre, a pioneering multi use community centre providing services for the homeless.

We saw first-hand the contemporary styled 15 units of affordable accommodation, 2 of which will be emergency accommodation for people in danger of becoming homeless.

On completion, the centre will also be home to vital support groups, like Stratford Foodbank, Citizens Advice, Job Centre Plus and Spring Housing Association.

We are excited about the latest progress and can’t wait for the official opening.

Following on from our previous announcement last month, we are pleased to showcase the latest milestone of our strip out, fit out and refurbishment project at the Fred Winter centre, a pioneering multi use community centre providing services for the homeless.

Scheduled for completion this summer, our latest phase includes the installation of new kitchens, shower rooms, flooring and decoration to the 15 accommodation units for people facing homelessness or are homeless. These rooms are going to look amazing once finished.

Demand for storage and distribution capacity will outstrip supply unless speculative development returns to pre-Covid-19 levels. This is according to Savills’ forecasting warehouse demand report.

We’ve taken a look and the highlights for the UK are:

During the last 5 years, the UK has attracted £148bn of private manufacturing investment, equating to 26 million sq. ft of warehouse space.
For every £1bn of UK manufacturing investment made, an additional 175,000 sq. ft of warehouse space is required
Demand is predicted to increase by 13% in 2021 and 3% by 2022.
A further 15.5m sq. ft of space will be required by the end of 2022.

Have you thought about giving your industrial building an MOT?

Time has an effect on our buildings, and it’s good practice to review them for any defects before they become major issues.

When we worked on this project at Engine Lane, Lye, it had been vacant for three years, and needed some TLC to make it wind and water tight again.

A brief scope of works:

We undertook roof repairs and installed weather flashings
Installed new trimline powder coated guttering and down pipes
Replaced the roller shutter doors
Made repairs to the external walling
Provided a full electrical upgrade

The project was delivered on schedule, on budget, and to the high standard our client expects from us. The building was made ready for a new tenant, with all electrics in perfect working order, entrances secured and the new roof structure protecting the premises.
