Monday marked the launch of Mental Health Awareness Week, the UK’s national week to raise awareness of mental health.
To coincide with the campaign, which runs from Monday 9 to Sunday 15 May, we are working with our health and safety consultant to focus on the mental health and wellbeing of our team, understanding that mental health needs to be cared for every week of the year and is as important as our physical health!
Research has found that just under a quarter of construction workers are considering leaving the industry due to mental health related problems and stress is a key factor. By dealing with stress, we can combat issues such as anxiety and depression.
James Haslam, Calztec C.E.O., said: “We are supporting the campaign to help break the stigma around mental health. This week we are carrying out mental health awareness training and holding discussions with the team. We want them to feel confident about opening up and talking through any issues they may be dealing with.”
Here are some symptoms to watch out for:
- Everyone has different moods, but sudden and dramatic changes in mood, such as extreme distress or anger, can be a symptom of mental illness.
- People experience problems with concentration, memory or logical thought and speech that are hard to explain.
- Using substances to cope, such as alcohol or drugs, can be a sign of mental health conditions.
- For some people, fluctuating weight or rapid weight loss could be one of the warning signs of a mental health disorder.
- Withdrawing from life, especially if this is a major change, could indicate a mental health disorder.
